The band 3Belas was formed in 1999 by songwriter S.O. (vocalist) and original band members Sp. (guitarist), A.S (guitarist), G.A (drummer) and J.S (bassist). The band name 3Belas was concocted by close friend Juju during the sessions beginning 1999 when the band performed fortnightly for public gigs as band performers for a café next to the national stadium arena. Throughout the process, the drummer and bassist had stand-ins and accompanists.
Over the years until 2005, 3Belas was invited to perform in various small gigs and concerts, as either the mainstream Malay band 3Belas, or the alt-name nu-metal band 13th Project, where S.O. managed drums. Nevertheless, as the band 3Belas, the team has written, composed more than 200 complete songs; with the short stint between 2000 until 2005 have been performed in public performances, and presented on radio waves, television shows and music videos.
3 CD demo albums were made available for the public, and simultaneously various songs were made available via the official 3Belas websites, and via platforms like MySpace Groups, SoundClick, i-Bands, and PureVolume. Several songs were shared globally by mp3 networks and reviewed by listeners, from South America to Japan. 3Belas was represented with its own logos, icons and artwork, some of them taken without permission by another band called 3Belas who was formed in 2007 (8 years after the original 3Belas).
3belas is a pastiche of all musical genres ranging from orchestral symphonies to acoustic simplicity. Its root is progressive modern rock with a hint of pop and dance. As the songwriter, 3Belas songs were mainly swayed by Bjork, David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Tony Bennett, Rhys Day, Edgar Winters, Eric Clapton, Bread, The Cardigans, Jamiroquai, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sarah MacLachlan, Britney Spears, Missy Elliot, Baz Luhrmann, Soggy Bottom Boys. Gradually 3Belas evolved from progressive rock to experimental funk rock and jazz rock, which is indicative of influences from Indonesia bands; most notably KLA Project, Scope and Nugie.
Due to multiple complexities, 3Belas pursued a short hiatus beginning 2006, to return in 2009; but was then mired with more complexities. 3Belas inevitably became the bucketlist that has so far never been fulfilled.
